Lazo

Voice check-in companion · English & Español

Install Lazo on your audio board, right from this page.

No downloads or drivers. Plug the Waveshare ESP32-S3-AUDIO-Board into your computer with a USB-C cable, press Install, then connect it to the home Wi-Fi. It takes about three minutes.

1

Plug in the board

  • Use a USB-C data cable. Some phone-charging cables carry power only and won't work.
  • Open this page in Google Chrome or Microsoft Edge on a Windows or Mac computer.
  • Windows 10/11 and macOS recognise the board automatically. No driver is needed.
2

Install the firmware

A window will list serial ports. Pick the one named USB JTAG/serial debug unit (or ESP32-S3), then choose Install and allow it to erase the board.

This browser can't talk to USB devices. Please open this page in Chrome or Edge on a computer. Installing needs a secure page. Open it over https:// or from localhost.
3

Connect it to Wi-Fi

  1. After installing, the ring blinks blue. The board is now broadcasting its own Wi-Fi network.
  2. On your phone or laptop, join the Wi-Fi network called Lazo-XXXX. A setup page opens; if it doesn't, visit http://192.168.4.1.
  3. Pick the home Wi-Fi and type its password. Lazo can only use 2.4 GHz networks; if the router shows two names, pick the one without “5G”.
  4. Open the Advanced tab. Under Custom OTA URL, enter your Lazo server address, for example https://lazo-relay.example.workers.dev/ota/, and save.
  5. The board restarts and plays a short sound when it's ready.

To redo Wi-Fi later, press the button three times quickly.

4

Say hello

Hold the button
Talk while holding, let go when done (like a walkie-talkie).
Tap once
Start a hands-free chat. Tap again to end it.
Say “Hi ESP”
Starts a hands-free chat without touching anything.

Lazo answers in English or Spanish, whichever is spoken to it.

What the light ring means

The colors are deliberately few and calm, so they're easy to read from across a room.

If something goes wrong

No serial port shows up in the list

Try a different USB-C cable (many are charge-only) and a different USB port on the computer. On a Mac, unplug any USB hubs and plug the board in directly.

The install fails or hangs at “Connecting…”

Put the board into download mode: unplug it, hold the BOOT button, plug it back in, then release BOOT. Press Install again. When it finishes, unplug and replug the board to start Lazo.

I can't find the Lazo-XXXX Wi-Fi network

Unplug the board, plug it back in, and press the button once while the ring is still circling white. That forces Wi-Fi setup mode. You can also press the button three times quickly at any time.

It connects, but never answers

Ask whoever runs the Lazo server to open its /health page, and to add the board's ID (its MAC address) to the allowed list if they use one. If the server moved, join Lazo-XXXX again (press the button three times), open Advanced and put the new address, ending in /ota/, under Custom OTA URL. No reinstall needed.
